Wilde Aparthotel By Staycity London Covent Garden

This aparthotel was stylish without trying too hard and I liked some of the quirky artwork and touches like copies of Oscar Wilde's books stacked on the bedside table.

THE APARTHOTEL: This 106-room aparthotel opened in 2018 and was the first Wilde property from Staycity. It says its premium brand ‘was inspired by Oscar Wilde’. It’s in a prime location on the corner of the Strand and just a short walk from Charing Cross Station. The group has recently opened a second Wilde aparthotel in Berlin with a third opening imminently in Edinburgh.

THE CHECK-IN: The small and simple lobby had a couple of self check-in units but a friendly member of staff nevertheless completed the process for me and showed me to my room.

THE ROOM: My studio room was nice and light, with floor-to-ceiling windows and views of the busy Strand below. Decor was understated with just a splash of colour here and there.

The bed, with Hypnos mattress, was comfortable if a little high off the ground – although I understood why when I eventually found the iron and ironing board stashed away in the large storage area beneath the bed.

The studio was perfectly well set up for longer stays, with a small sofa, table and chairs, kitchenette with basin, Nespresso coffee machine, SMEG kettle and toaster, microwave, hob, fridge, mini dishwasher and 43-inch wallmounted TV.

There was reasonable hanging space for clothes and a fairly small but good quality shower room. Electric blinds and lighting were all controlled by a touch panel by the bed, while a whatsapp number was available to contact staff with any queries. There was also a small basket full of crisps and snacks that were available to buy.

THE FACILITIES: There are no facilities of note. The property has been kept simple and there’s no bar, restaurant or even communal space, although discounted breakfast is available at nearby Smith & Wollensky for £15 and there’s a room service menu too.

THE VERDICT: I enjoyed my fleeting stay at this aparthotel and would happily visit for longer. It was stylish without trying too hard and I liked some of the quirky artwork and touches like copies of Oscar Wilde’s books stacked on the bedside table. The location is also a boon for business and leisure guests alike
