Geopolitical uncertainty, climate-related disruption and ongoing cost pressures are set to reshape the meetings and events sector in 2027, according to a new industry trends report from BCD Meetings & Events (BCD M&E).
The latest edition of the company’s annual Meetings & Events Trends guide identifies resilience, artificial intelligence, attendee engagement and strategic investment as the key themes expected to influence corporate event programmes over the coming year.
Now in its 10th year, the report suggests organisations are taking a more structured approach to risk management as external challenges continue to affect business operations.
Event planners are increasingly being expected to factor climate risks, geopolitical developments and operational disruption into the event design process from the outset rather than treating them as contingency considerations.
The guide also points to a shift in how organisations are using artificial intelligence. After a period of experimentation, businesses are expected to focus more closely on governance, accountability and measurable outcomes. The report predicts that AI tools will be used to improve efficiency and support decision-making, while demonstrating clear value to stakeholders.
Attendee expectations are also evolving. According to the report, delegates are becoming more selective about the events they attend, placing greater emphasis on the relevance of content, networking opportunities and the overall experience. As a result, event organisers are under growing pressure to demonstrate the value of participation and build trust with audiences.
A further trend identified in the report is the increasing treatment of meetings and events as strategic investments rather than standalone activities. Organisations are expected to take a portfolio approach to their event programmes, aligning investment decisions more closely with wider business priorities and objectives.
Beyond the four headline trends, the report explores leadership priorities for event professionals, as well as developments in creativity, return on value and sustainability.
Bruce Morgan, Global President of BCD M&E, said the meetings and events sector had demonstrated significant resilience over the past decade despite a series of challenges.
“If the last 10 years have shown us anything, it’s the remarkable resilience of this industry,” he said. “We’ve faced extraordinary challenges, but meetings and events continue to adapt.”
The report also includes regional outlooks for APAC, EMEA, LATAM, NORAM and the UK, highlighting expected differences in market conditions, regulation, cost pressures and destination demand.
BCD M&E said the findings are intended to help organisations plan their event strategies for 2027 and make more informed decisions about when, where and how they bring people together.
