The upgrade is part of the rail operator’s plan to improve customer experience across its West Coast inter-city network, in line with its vision for the ‘Digital Train of the Future.’
Passengers logging into Virgin Train’s Wi-Fi will be directed to the portal’s landing page, where they will also have access to the updated free on-board entertainment service BEAM, a journey planner and the service’s food and beverage menu.
Virgin Trains’ Chief Information Officer, Jon Sullivan, said: “Our enhanced Wi-Fi means customers can stay connected and up to date as they travel or dip into the latest boxsets and movies through our entertainment service BEAM.”
Adding to its enhanced on-board technology, Virgin Trains is also launching a train ticket booking app, which it says will guarantee travellers the best price for journeys on the network.
The new technology, which is due to go live by the end of this year, will include an Oyster-style fares cap and a split-ticketing function that automatically calculates if a cheaper combination of fares for one journey is available.
