Travel-as-a-Service platform, Spotnana, has launched an initiative to help corporate travel programmes reach their sustainability goals.
Called Spotnana Carbon Removal, it means clients can remove carbon from the atmosphere through advanced technology that Spotnana claims is “fast, exact and permanent”.
Offsets will be offered through a partnership with Creturner Group, which uses a Bio Carbon Capture and Storage process to convert wood-based waste products into coal that is deposited into old, end-of-life mining pits.
Described as “like a coal mine in reverse”, Spotnana said the process ensures that a precise amount of carbon is permanently removed from the atmosphere and stored underground.
After an offset is purchased, a digital certificate is provided to customers in the form of a blockchain-based token as proof of their carbon emission removal.
“Corporations need effective solutions for true carbon removal to ensure travel is sustainable for current and future generations,” said Johnny Thorsen, VP of Partnerships at Spotnana.
“To achieve net zero impact, we believe it’s essential to provide access to carbon removal technology that is effective, accurate, and simple to use.”
Thorsen said while sustainable air fuel (SAF) has an “important and growing role to play in the future of decarbonising air travel”, the industry is many years away from having sufficient quantities of SAF to power all flights.
“In addition, SAF can only remove approximately 80% of emissions from air travel, and therefore can’t be the only strategy we use to achieve net zero emissions goals,” he said.
“It’s also important to recognise that there are many forms of carbon offsets in the world available at a wide range of prices. Too often, companies purchase low quality offsets tied to carbon avoidance programs. While there are benefits to some carbon avoidance programs, others, unfortunately, amount to little more than greenwashing.”
Daniel Moström, Board Chairman at Creturner Group, added: “Unlike traditional forms of carbon offsets like tree planting, our approach is immediate, permanent, and clearly measurable.”
Spotnana will also use Spotnana Carbon Removal to offset carbon emissions created by its own employees when they travel for business.
