Ready & Able Team Amex GBT, DE&I Champion

The Ready & Able Inclusion Group at American Express GBT hope to inspire organisations to 'create a more inclusive environment' after being voted Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Champion 2023

What does it mean to you to win a 2023 Business Travel People Award?

Our People Award was for our work in making business travel more accessible and inclusive, so it is really rewarding to be recognised for this. The Ready & Able team had made vast efforts, both internally supporting our colleagues with disabilities and externally with our clients, so to be acknowledged for that and have the opportunity to be leading the way in our industry was fantastic.

How did you feel when your team’s name was called?

There were many other great contenders, so it was such a wonderful surprise. We were so proud that the team’s trailblazing efforts were being recognised.

What was the reaction of your family, friends and colleagues when you won the award?

Everyone was so excited for us. We were immediately getting messages of congratulations. Our senior leadership team came round the office the next day and thanked us in person for our hard work.

How do you think winning the award will impact your team’s profile within your business and the wider industry?

Accessibility is so important and winning this award can only help drive awareness. We hope the work we’ve done in our own Ready & Able Inclusion Group will inspire other organisations to start inclusion groups of their own, and provoke conversations about how to create a more inclusive environment for colleagues with disabilities. From an external perspective, we hope it will encourage organisations to evaluate their products, services and set up, and ask ‘Is this accessible for my employees and customers? Will this work for everyone?’.

What advice would you give to anyone considering entering the awards in 2024?

Go for it! Even just to be nominated is a great feeling and by entering you are not only celebrating a person or team for their efforts but also shining an industry spotlight on their work and giving it the attention it deserves.

Where will you be keeping your award?

Our award has pride of place in our London office. It’s one of the first things you see when you walk into reception and it’s a nice reminder of what we’ve achieved — and a reminder to keep momentum in driving the change.
