Nico Nicholas, Chair’s Award

The Chair's Award will "help us to get in front of the right people", says Nico Nicholas

What does it mean to you to win a 2024 Business Travel People Award?

When you put so much effort into your job and are recognised for the work like this, it is simply amazing.

How did you feel when your name was called?

I was in absolute shock — I had just returned from a long-haul trip and wasn’t expecting to win any award, so I felt that all my efforts had been recognised. It made me feel so appreciated. Working in sustainability can often be tough, with a lot of non-believers and those who don’t really understand what you do and how important your work is. This prestigious award really made me feel that all those tough times were worth it.

What was the reaction of your family, friends and colleagues when you won the award?

My whole team was elated. While I won the award, I wouldn’t have ever been able to do this without the support of my team. This is a husband and wife business, and my wife, Elkie is my co-warrior. I could never have started on this journey without her support; I actually think it was her idea!

How do you think winning the award will impact your profile in the wider industry?

I think this award will help us to get in front of the right people. There’s a lot of competition in our space. Some have taken investment and can make a lot of noise. We are self-funded (except for some friends who invested small amounts at the start), so we can’t make as much noise as others. People may wonder why we won and not our competitors. Hopefully they will connect with us to find out why.

What advice would you give to anyone considering entering the awards?

Everyone who is anyone is there. Being recognised is extremely important and seeing your name on screen, whether you win or are nominated is wonderful. It can most definitely help your company’s profile or even your own career.

Where will you be keeping your award?

Elkie and I work side by side. Our award sits between our monitors, so we have a constant reminder of what we have achieved. It really helps on tough days.
