LNER train trials bio-based livery

LNER has named one of its trains ‘Our Planet’ and applied a new livery that uses a partially bio-based material.

To highlight the wider rail industry’s role in encouraging a low carbon economy, LNER announced its intention to use some of the most environmentally sustainable materials to apply liveries to future trains. Unit 801204 will serve destinations along LNER’s East Coast route.

LNER has reduced its carbon emissions by 47% since the launch of its fleet of Azuma trains in 2019 and is committed to becoming a net-zero business by 2045.

Warrick Dent, Safety & Operations Director and Responsible Business Chair at LNER, said: “LNER has made a commitment to embed sustainability, equality and just practices into everything we do. We wanted to showcase this by finding an alternative to traditional train vinyls that are non-recyclable.

“We’re proud to be trailing a partially bio-based product that could significantly improve the way our trains are maintained in the future.”
