Japan Airlines has been named the world’s most reliable airline in new research from an insurance company.
Just 1.05% of the airline’s flights were cancelled and 10.5% were delayed during the research period in autumn last year.
KLM Cityhopper was ranked second most reliable airline with a lower percentage of flights delayed (9.6%) but more cancellations (1.13%).
India’s low-cost carrier IndiGo was third, KLM fourth and Azul fifth. Completing the top ten were Emirates, Qatar Airways, ANA, Jet Airways and Finnair.
The worst ten performers were also named and shamed, with Frontier Airlines bottom of the pile. A whopping 30.64% of its flights delayed – with an average delay of 65 minutes – and 1.8% were cancelled. Its customer rating was also among the lowest with a score of three out of ten.
Next worst was American Airlines (18% of flights delayed; 2.39% cancelled) followed by Vueling, Jetstar and Air Canada. LOT, Eurowings, Norwegian, SpiceJet and Avianca completed the top ten.
The project from Get Going travel insurance compiled information on flight cancellations, flight delays, average delay waiting time, safety ranking and customer rating for 50 airlines, cross-referencing data from caa.co.uk, flightaware.com, flightstats.com and airlineratings.com.
