The Principal Edinburgh, Charlotte Square

THE HOTEL:Formerly known as the Roxburghe Hotel, this is a five-storey property offering 199 rooms and suites, now under the management of Principal Hotels. It has recently undergone a multimillion-pound refurbishment, with all the rooms and suites having been given a smart overhaul inspired by the golden age of travel. The newly rebranded property consists of seven inter-connecting Georgian townhouses in the heart of the New Town area of Edinburgh, a UNESCO world heritage site.

THE CHECK-IN: Friendly check-in staff greeted me, we went through the registration process and I was then shown to my room. My bags were delivered almost immediately.

THE ROOM: I stayed in a Superior guestroom which was very tastefully decorated, the tartan touches and pictures on the wall immediately reminding me I was in Scotland. The spacious room had a double bed, a coffee table and a couple of armchairs; and the bathroom included signature toiletries designed in collaboration with The Perfumer’s Story and a rainfall shower. Principal’s signature Tuck Box was a nice treat.

THE FACILITIES: The hotel has six meeting rooms offering space for between 12 and 350 delegates, which is part of Principal's new Smart Space product. The largest of the rooms is the Gallery and all the rooms are kitted out with audio visual equipment. Centrally located on the ground floor is The Garden where guests can enjoy breakfast and, later, an all-day menu of salads, sandwiches and so forth. The corner shop in the lobby is open 24 hours a day and there is also a full room service menu available. A new open kitchen restaurant called BABA is due to open in November, serving Scottish lamb, beef and seafood. There’s free, superfast wifi with available throughout the hotel.

THE VERDICT: The hotel's extensive refurbishment is evident the minute you walk into reception. It was definitely a home-from-home and the staff were very attentive. There are a number of smart stylish touches throughout the hotel, helping create a distinctive Scottish air to the property
