Hilton London Metropole

THE HOTEL: With 1,059 guest rooms the hotel is a sprawling property set over three wings. It is located in the heart of London, a twominute walk from Edgware Road tube station and ten minutes from Paddington for express connections to Heathrow airport.

THE CHECK-IN: It was a busy Monday evening and several others were checking in at the same time. Staff were efficient and courteous and I later discovered there is a separate checkin area for the West Wing in which I was staying.

THE ROOM: I was in a King Superior room. It was more spacious than most London hotel rooms I have stayed in and decorated in darkish but ‘warm’ tones. Very contemporary and ultracomfortable, the room felt a little ‘businesslike’. There was a work station and chair, flatscreen TV, coffee maker and fridge and a wellstocked minibar. Wifi was free and fast (and also complimentary in the public areas). Inroom dining and laundry service is available 24 hours.

THE BUSINESS: The hotel claims one of the largest conference centres in Europe, holding up to 3,000 delegates. There are 42 meeting and event rooms – including several suites that can hold up to 1,600 – several rooms that can be converted into hospitality suites or boardrooms and a business centre. Meeting room hire is from £250 for 16 delegates. There’s a dedicated reception for delegate registration.

THE FACILITIES: The 23rd floor Kojawan restaurant serves Asian cuisine and the adjoining ‘O’ Bar has great views of London. On the ground floor, the Edg Bar and Lounge is a large, open space and attracts plenty of non-residents. There's also a sports bar that serves burgers and home-made pizzas, a whisky lounge and the Fiamma restaurant, which serves breakfast. There’s also a LivingWell Health Club with fitness centre, indoor pool, sauna and steam room.

THE VERDICT: Its central location, size and layout gives it a busy, bustling and somewhat impersonal feel, but this is more than compensated for by the super-efficient and very friendly staff. The hotel has been through a major renovation and this is most obviously seen in the bright and contemporary reception area.
