The Capital Hotel, London

THE HOTEL:The Capital Hotel is a 49-room boutique property on a quiet residential street behind Brompton Road and close to Knightsbridge Underground station. It is next door to sister hotel The Levin and is now part of Warwick Hotels & Resorts

THE CHECK-IN: The lobby has both a small concierge booth and reception desk. Both were overseen by beaming members of staff who quickly checked me in and handed over a traditional room key attached to a large wooden block “so that you have to speak to the concierge,” joked a member of staff

THE ROOM: My room for the night was a spacious junior suite with classic country house-style décor including floral drapes and patterned wallpaper. A sitting area contained a sofa, arm chairs, Nespresso machine, coffee table and TV, while the bedroom – separated by an archway – had another TV, desk and large ensuite bathroom with a bath and Temple Spa toiletries. A large wardrobe housed a safe, iron and ironing board. A second, smaller bathroom by the suite's entrance had a walk-in shower.

THE FACILITIES: Outlaw’s at The Capital is a popular Michelin-starred restaurant headed up by Nathan Outlaw. Specialising in British seafood dishes, it received a steady steam of diners as I enjoyed a drink in the cosy adjacent bar, where light meals and afternoon tea are also available. For meetings and events, The Eaton Suite can seat 14 for private dining, the Cadogan Suite has capacity for up to 30 theatre-style, and the Sitting Room can host eight for dinners or up to 20 for receptions. The Knightsbridge Metro restaurant at the next door Levin Hotel is also available for exclusive hire. Wifi access was complimentary.

THE VERDICT: The Capital is a traditional luxury hotel with plenty of character – if ‘classic’ is not your thing then head next door to sister hotel The Levin – in an excellent Knightsbridge location. The hotel takes great pride in its long-serving and charismatic staff who certainly added a breath of fresh air to my overnight visit.
