South Point Suites, London

THE HOTEL: Cycas Hospitality's South Point Suites aparthotel opened last October and has 101 studios and one-bedroom suites. It is located on Bermondsey Street, a ten-minute walk from London Bridge station.

THE CHECK-IN: I was welcomed into the reception area by two cheerful members of staff, one of whom proceeded to check me in and give a useful rundown of the property's facilities. The reception is adjacent to the 'pantry' and lounge area, all of which had an understated, slightly industrial – and therefore fashionable – look to it. I was told the aparthotel is proving popular with both leisure and business guests, including the employees of a major professional services company nearby.

THE ROOM: Emerging from the lift on the third floor, a multi-storey 'light well' illuminated the corridor to the left, while there was an opaque glass wall to the right with open gaps that meant the corridor was not much warmer than the outside. There was no such chill upon entering my onebedroom suite, however, which was thoughtfully designed to maximise space. Decor was largely blues and greys, augmented with some quirky London-inspired art and curios. A doubled bed was right by the door, which felt a little odd at first, with a small bathroom and wardrobe separating it from the living area. This comprised a kitchenette, sofa bed, table and chairs, with street views. There were wall-mounted TVs in both areas and facilities included a safe, ironing board, nespresso machine, kettle, cooker, microwave, sink, fridge, toaster, tiny dishwasher and all the necessary crockery for a short stay.

THE FACILITIES: Use of the gym, wifi and laundry room are all complimentary, and a social event is held every Tuesday evening for guests to meet and mingle. Breakfast is served in the lounge and pantry area, where snacks and drinks are available around the clock. There are plenty of bars and cafes nearby.

THE VERDICT: The overall design is well-pitched – cool but not cloying so – and the suites pack a lot into a relatively small space. A good choice for an extended stay in the area.

THE DETAILS: South Point Suites, 190 Bermondsey Street, London SE1 3TQ. Rates start from £160 per night including VAT for stays of one to six nights. The nightly rate decreases for longer stays.
