Flying Butler, London Bridge

THE HOTEL: Flying Butler Apartments operate over 115 serviced apartments across 18 London properties, including this London Bridge/Tooley Street building. It is a five-minute walk from London Bridge Station and the average stay at the property is 14-21 nights.

THE ARRIVAL: I was emailed the address and access codes (for the main outer door and then for a key box outside my apartment) several days before the date of my stay and gaining entry proved to be straightforward.

THE APARTMENT: The 2.5 bedroom apartment was vast, with a long kitchen diner and lounge, a master bedroom, second large bedroom, 'box' room with single bed (the 0.5 in the '2.5') and a bathroom. A large cupboard in the hallway contained an iron and ironing board, vacuum cleaner, fan, airer and laundry basket, while the kitchen came with all the essentials: oven, hob, fridge, freezer, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine and cupboards full of crockery. A dining table bridged the space between kitchen and lounge, where a large corner sofa sat adjacent to glass doors overlooking Tooley Street. The TV came with the usual Freeview Channels and there was also a useful tablet device with information on the apartments and the surrounding area. Wifi access was included. The unit was well soundproofed and the largely neutral decor and wooden floors were typical of many serviced apartments. Some basic provisions were supplied – tea bags, washing up liquid etc – and there was also a hairdryer hidden away in a draw that I discovered shortly before checking out. The bedrooms had plenty of storage space and quality linen, plus views of the Shard.

THE VERDICT: The light, spacious apartment was appropriately equipped for longer stays and it's in an excellent position close to key transport hubs. The large apartments with multiple bedrooms and bathrooms are ideal for colleagues sharing, which has obvious cost benefits. This being a serviced apartment block, staff weren't particularly visible but they did respond quickly and effectively when I called with a query and left a message.
