The UK Government has confirmed that its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme will be widened to all visitors worldwide next year.

The online pre-trip check, which was introduced in November 2023 for a number of Middle Eastern destinations, will be extended to travellers from eligible non-European countries (who do not currently require a visa for short-stay visits) from January 8 2025.

From April 2, it will be extended to travellers from European countries.

Online applications for non-European and European travellers will open from November 27 2024 and from European visitors from March 5 2025.

“Digitisation enables a smooth experience for the millions of people who pass through the border every year, ”said Seema Malhotra, UK Minister for Migration and Citizenship.

“The worldwide expansion of the ETA demonstrates our commitment to enhance security through new technology and embedding a modern immigration system.”

The £10 ETA will be electronically linked to travellers’ passports and applications can be made through online or via an app.

It will allow multiple journeys to the UK (for stays of up to six months) over a period of two years.
