Most major hotel brands are represented in Canberra including Hyatt, Best Western, Novotel, Mercure and Crowne Plaza. The artsy Hotel Hotel has an award-winning bar and restaurant. Avenue Hotel is located close to the Braddon precinct and offers stylish, modern rooms. The central East Hotel offers apartments suitable for longer stays.

Eating

As in much of Australia, brunch is a popular dining option. Top spots include Mocan & Green Grout and The Cupping Room, which has a bean menu for its coffee. In the North Quarter try Cream for contemporary dishes. Courgette offers fine dining in the heart of the city. Braddon on the edge of the business district is home to the award-winning Sage Dining Rooms and trendy eatery, eightysix.

Drinking

Craft brew enthusiasts should head to the hip Braddon neighbourhood and try the ales and ciders at BentSpoke Brewing Co. Parlour Wine Room in NewActon has an extensive wine list and classic cocktails. The strip of lakeside bars in Kingston Foreshore includes tropical-themed Betti Bravos and friendly pub, The Durham. The Dock is a great spot for sports and live music.

Getting Downtown

Canberra International Airport is located 8km from the city centre. Taxis are available for around $25 to downtown, while ACTION buses operate every half hour to the city bus station – tickets are $4. A private bus service from the Royale Group is available for $10. Major car hire companies are represented at the airport.

Must-see sights

The Australian War Memorial is a vast complex commemorating the sacrifices of Australia’s armed forces. Parliament House is open for tours, with the best access on non-sitting days. At the National Zoo and Aquarium, you can pat a cheetah or become acquainted with a meerkat.

Getting there

Canberra is served by Canberra International Airport (CBR) located within the city. There are no direct flights from the UK but there are numerous one-stop options. Among them are Qatar Airways which will begin daily flights from Doha to Canberra (via Sydney) from February 13, 2018. Domestic services are available with Qantas, Virgin Australia, Tigerair Australia and FlyPelican offering services from major Australian cities
