Aparthotel: Bermonds Locke, London

THE APARTHOTEL

A 10-minute walk from Tower Bridge and London Bridge stations, this modern apartment block is featured by Silverdoor Apartments. It has a relaxed, trendy vibe and is a popular meeting and work space for the local community as well as for visitors.

THE CHECK-IN

The uber-cool entrance was full of young and trendy professionals using the large co-working space, which offers plentiful stone desks with multiple power points and low tables with giant bean bags. The welcome was warm and cheerful and check-in was quick and easy. The staff were dressed casually and were very accommodating, insisting: “this is your home, use it how it suits you”.

THE APARTMENT

The Studio Apartment was fresh and bright, with wood effect floors and sunny peach and blue decor. A small lobby had coat hanging space, leading to the bedroom area with twin beds, widescreen TV, more hanging space and storage. Linen throws, plants and paintings gave a home-from-home feel. The adjoining bathroom, with a great power shower, was modern and stylish with large pump-bottle toiletries. A three-quarter height dividing wall separated the bedroom from a kitchen/dining area where floor to ceiling windows ensured a light and open feel and views over Bermondsey. The well-equipped kitchenette included a washing machine and dishwasher, hob, toaster, kettle and plenty of pans and crockery for self-catering. A mobile kitchen island provided further worktops and storage.

THE FACILITIES

A buzzing coffee shop in the reception area serves pastries, snacks and some hot meals from 10am-4pm but the larger Bermondsey Larder restaurant was closed for refurbishment during my stay. A relaxed central courtyard, with hammocks, outdoor seating and much natural foliage, provided for a quiet garden escape. Bermondsey Street, with its many cafes, bars and restaurants, was five minutes’ walk. Take-aways could be delivered to the reception.

THE VERDICT

A well-located, well-equipped studio with stylish communal areas that have a relaxed and cosy vibe. This place has bags of character and is well set up for modern business travellers.
