Amex GBT proposes ‘remedies’ to secure CWT deal approval

American Express GBT has outlined a number of ‘remedies’ to meet the concerns of competition watchdogs about its planned acquisition of CWT.

It has laid out a plan that it hopes will persuade the Competition and Markets Authority to let the proposed deal go ahead.

Amex GBT is offering to:

  • Open up CWT’s global partner network to competing TMCs, helping these TMCs to compete effectively for global multi-national customers
  • Set price caps on product and service fees for all existing and renewing CWT and Amex GBT global multi-national customers, provided there is no material change to the scope of products and services requested by these customers
  • To guarantee existing CWT and Amex GBT clients the current contractual service level obligations from those set out in existing contracts
  • To continue to invest in business travel services at Amex GBT’s current level of capital expenditure.
  • To agree to a possible divestment to another TMC of “certain CWT global multi-national customer contracts with a substantial UK nexus”, if this was required by the CMA.

Presenting these remedies, the CMA said interested parties are requested to provide any views in writing, including any practical alternative remedies they wish the CMA to consider, by 5pm on December 2 2024.

Comments should be provided by email to gbt.cwt@cma.gov.uk.

The CMA’s final decision is expected on January 26 2025.
