London the best-connected city worldwide

London is the best-connected city in the world, helping the capital welcome record numbers of business travellers, says London & Partners.

New research from fDi Benchmark shows London’s six airports operate flights to 336 destinations globally, an increase of 5.7% on the previous year, and a considerable way ahead of second-placed Paris (269 destinations).

Frankfurt is the third best-connected city, with flights to 242 destinations worldwide, Dubai is fourth (237) and Istanbul is fifth (236). Amsterdam, Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok and New York City complete the top ten.

The new data comes as figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) International Passenger Survey show that international business visits to London have grown by 34 per cent over the past five years, with one in five overseas arrivals now visiting the capital on business.

“A destination can have the best venues but if delegates can’t get there it simply won’t work,” says Rachael Boraston, Sales and Marketing Manager at Principal. London DMC.

“Great connectivity also often translates into cost savings for event planners, and at a time when budgets are tight, this is paramount. Whether it is getting here, or moving around the city, London’s accessibility is definitely a major draw for event professionals.”

It was also revealed this week that London has retained its position in the top five Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) rankings, having climbed from 19th in five years.

Paris took the top spot, followed by Vienna, Barcelona, Berlin and London.
