The Park Hotel, Amsterdam

THE HOTEL: This 189-room hotel was refurbished in 2009 and is now an ultra-trendy four-star boutique property. Walking distance to the city centre, it is far enough away to avoid the inevitable stag party crowd. On my doorstep was the pretty Vondelpark, P.C. Hooftstraat (a designer shopping street) and the Museum Quarter.

THE CHECK-IN: The check-in was swift and staff were courteous, and I was soon settled in my room.

THE ROOM: My superior room was compact, with two frosted glass pods forming the toilet and 'rainforest' shower area (make sure you shut the door before you turn on the water!). As a business traveller’s bolt hole it was fine but for longer stays it's worth considering an upgrade to the executive category or even a suite. Amenities included a desk, TV, safe, tea, coffee and minibar. The gorgeous amenities came from Dutch brand Dead Clean. Wifi access is free throughout the hotel.

THE BUSINESS: The hotel has more than 700 square metres of meeting space spread across nine rooms. This ranges from the New York room, which has capacity for up to 130 delegates, down to the Berlin boardroom with space for up to 20 attendees. Ambient lighting and video conferencing are just some of the facilities available. The delegate rate is from 65 euros per person per day including lunch.

THE FACILITIES: The hotel's Park 24H Workout fitness centre is open around the clock and the hotel can provide workout gear if guests forget theirs. It has partnered with the City Street Spa on the pretty Prinsengracht canal to offer spa and beauty treatments. The trendy, award-winning MOMO restaurant and bar blends Pan-Asian cuisine with a dash of New York style. It's popular with locals as well as those staying at the hotel. Private dining spaces are also available.

THE VERDICT: I particularly loved the public areas of this quirky hotel, which included stained glass windows on the landings and a gallery zone in the lobby that showcases the work of local artists. The food was fantastic and the service always friendly.

THE DETAILS: The Park Hotel, Stadhouderskade 25, 1071, Amsterdam, Netherlands. The rack rate for superior rooms starts from 375 euros per night. see: www.parkhotel.nl.
