The Lancaster Hotel, London

THE HOTEL: The four-star, 416- room Lancaster London is located on Hyde Park's northern edge and is directly above Lancaster Gate Underground station. Its sister properties in the capital are The Landmark, K West Hotel & Spa and Basil Street Apartments.

THE CHECK-IN: The hotel lobby was pretty quiet when I arrived and I was welcomed, checked-in and directed to my room without delay.

THE ROOM: The first thing that struck me about my suite for the night were the superb views across Hyde Park and central London to the east. Next was the generous size of the suite, with a large living/dining area and bedroom separated by a marble bathroom (with twin basins, bath and walk-in shower) and hallway. The living area featured two sofas, round dining table, desk, flatscreen TV, coffee table and coffee machine. Decor was fairly neutral with classic touches and a splashes of green – a nod to leafy Hyde Park, perhaps.

THE BUSINESS: The hotel is well known for its meetings and events facilities which include the Nine Kings Suite – for up to 1,500 people – and the 1,200 capacity Westbourne Suite. Smaller spaces include the Beech, Oak, Willow and Cedar suites, plus the Boardroom with wood-panelled walls and picture windows. There's also the Senses room for menu tastings and event previews. The DDR is from £75. Wifi access is free throughout the hotel.

THE FACILITIES: There are two restaurants: the Island Grill for allday dining (I enjoyed a good threecourse lunch menu and glass of wine for £25) and the highly lauded, two AA Rosette Nipa Thai restaurant, endorsed by the Thai government, no less. Light meals and afternoon tea are also served in the first floor lounge bar. There's also a new fitness centre.

THE VERDICT:The hotel is in a good location, with direct access to the Central Line and only a fiveminute walk from Paddington Station and its express services to Heathrow. Overseas colleagues and clients will appreciate panoramic views of Hyde Park and central London from higher floors, and service was consistently good.

THE DETAILS: The Lancaster Hotel, Lancaster Terrace, London W2 2TY. Room rates start from around £179 per night. The hotel's current refurbishment will be complete in autumn 2017.; see;
