The Colonnade, London

THE HOTEL: Almost imperceptible amongst the genteel Victorian and Georgian townhouses of Little Venice in London, the classy Colonnade on Warrington Crescent is a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts and has 43 rooms and suites.

THE CHECK-IN: Reception comprises a well-used, leather-topped desk, the sort you might imagine one of the Bloomsbury set writing at, sitting yards from the front door, to the right of the very tranquil gold, cream and red sitting room. Within a minute of finding the hotel, I was sitting on my bed chomping on apples from reception apples and admiring the views over Warrington Crescent.

THE ROOM: The ground level of my luxury suite incorporated a sitting area with flat screen TV, desk, pretty white stucco fireplace with floral arrangements and oodles of wardrobe space. Down a little flight of stairs was our bathroom – the bath was great, although I later had hot water issues with the shower. On the top deck, the king size bed wrapped in Egyptian cotton was so comfortable that just the thought of it later that evening drew me away from my business sooner than intended.

THE BUSINESS: This hotel makes for a very refined, cultured little venue for small gatherings in its 20m2 private meeting room with flexible layout. The hotel has a separate entrance for the meeting room and the restaurant which can also be used for private gatherings. There’s wifi throughout, of course.

THE FACILITIES: If you’ve had a heavy day in central London, the sitting room is the perfect place to immediately sink into a sofa, order a drink and peruse the papers. One floor down, the restaurant has been ingeniously designed so that although it is below ground it sucks in masses of light from the windows which are arranged in a conservatory-like affair.

THE VERDICT: From the crisp zingy green apples on reception to the perfectly boiled eggs at breakfast, the devil is in the detail and the Colonnade does details well. This isn’t brash, it isn’t loud, its genteel old school London done impeccably well.

THE DETAILS: The Colonnade Hotel, 2 Warrington Crescent London, W9 1ER. Rooms start at £120 per night for a classic double and three bedroom suites are from £520. Tel 020 7286 1052; see
