New York Hilton Midtown

THE HOTEL: The New York Hilton Midtown, with 1,985 guestrooms and suites, is the largest hotel in the city. It is located six blocks south of Central Park on 6th Avenue and an entrance to 7th Avenue subway station (for the B, D & E lines) is on the same block.

THE CHECK-IN: I arrived via a side entrance to the hotel and navigated my way to a bustling lobby. There was no queue to check-in, although the rate at which the member of staff bombarded me with information suggested she was in a hurry – or just very efficient.

THE ROOM: The Premier room I was staying in was one of the hotel's newly-refurbished rooms, with light blue/grey decor and a view between skyscrapers of Central Park. There was an easy chair and ottoman, safe, iron/ironing board, 55-inch wall mounted TV, long desk and smart white bathroom with shower over bath and large, illuminated mirror.

THE BUSINESS: There was free wifi and I had access to the ground floor Executive lounge for continental breakfast, evening canapes and refreshments throughout the day. There's also a 24-hour business centre and, at 151,000 ft2, some of the largest meetings and events facilities in New York City.

THE FACILITIES: On the ground floor is the Bridges Bar, Lobby Lounge, recently-opened Herb & Kitchen deli and coffee shop concept, plus a gift and sundries shop. There's also a fitness centre on the second floor. For those with spare time on their hands, the Museum of Modern Art, Radio City Music Hall, Times Square, Broadway and Central Park are all within easy walking distance.

THE VERDICT: This is a really well located hotel with smart new rooms and all the necessary business facilities. In fact, the hotel is so big that it felt like I only scratched the surface in terms of discovering its complete offering. It was mid-way through renovation (due for completion in 2016) at the time of my visit but this created very little disturbance. If further evidence of the hotel's high standing is required, note that it has hosted every US president since JFK.

THE DETAILS: New York Hilton Midtown, 1335 Avenue of the Americas, New York, New York, 10019, USA. Rates start from around $399 (£260) per night. See:
