Mercure, Hamburg City
THE HOTEL: In the south of the city, this 187-Mercure hotel sits on a corner of a main artery road into town that belies the tranquil, canal-side setting once inside. It's conveniently close to Hammerbrook metro station which is just one stop away from Hauptbahnhof.
THE CHECK-IN:A friendly staff member checked me in quickly and spent time explaining local transport routes on a map, which was valuable advice.
THE ROOM: A good-size room (a Superior with queen-size bed) and pleasant, if not cohesive, décor including a painting of Chairman Mao! There was a mix of woods in the over-size headboard, desk and furniture, plus there was a flatscreen TV, sofa, open wardrobe area, decent lighting, minibar, coffee machine and free wifi access. The bathroom had a bath tub with overhead power shower, large mirror, decent wall-mounted hairdryer and generous Mercure toiletries.
THE BUSINESS: This is a great event hotel, with seven conference rooms for up to 350 people and all with natural light, plus Kai 10, a novel and very stylish/space-age looking floating space on a pontoon over the Mittelkanal canal offering a further two meeting/events rooms. Day delegate rates start from ¤63 per person per day.
THE FACILITIES: There's the Dialogue restaurant and circular-shaped and colourful Studio M bar overlooking the canal that opens until 2am, plus the lounge lobby with two PCs (usage is free of charge), an underground garage and additional parking spaces in front of the hotel, plus a sauna in the basement.
THE VERDICT: A comfortable hotel with a relaxed ambience set against a leafy location next to the canal. It's in a good location for business at the Messe.
