London NYC, New York

THE HOTEL: This is a Blackstone-owned, all-suite property in the heart of Midtown, New York City, and although it’s a 561-suite hotel, with only 14 suites per floor it doesn’t feel like a bed factory.

THE CHECK-IN: A glamorous, dramatic and buzzy, high-ceilinged lobby greets guests and it’s adjacent to the bar and breakfast room. Staff were attentive and in no time I was walking round the back of the desk to the bank of lifts to the 25th floor

THE ROOM: A great suite in elegant neutral colours with doors to close off the bedroom, making it ideal for small meetings. The large sitting room was dominated by a semicircular sofa in the window, flatscreen TV, desk, good lighting, minibar and laptop-size safe. The bedroom was equally spacious and had a dressing area en route to a large bathroom which had two walk-in showers, luxury robes, double basin and toiletries.

THE FACILITIES:There is a cavernous and high-spec gym on the 4th floor for residents only, featuring 3D Life Fitness bikes that can compete against each other, cross trainers and the like. A major magnet is the two-star Michelin Gordon Ramsay restaurant, Maze, which also handles private dining and room service. Maze is open for dinner only from Tuesday to Saturday, and there is a chef’s table in the kitchen for up to eight as well as cooking classes run as incentives. A second restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and was full of business types.

THE BUSINESS: There is a business centre and extensive meetings space across the 2nd floor, all with free wifi, including a boardroom for up to 15 people, another for 30 and a larger space (when combined) that accommodates 100 people for cocktail receptions. The 24-hour rate ranges from US$6,000 to US$15,000, depending on season and availability. The Michelin-starred restaurant on the ground floor also doubles as meeting space for 35, achieved by turning wall panels for a more sombre backdrop.

THE VERDICT: A well-located, stylish and slick property, with bags of atmosphere and with helpful, proactive staff.
