JW Marriott Marquis, Dubai

THE HOTEL: Another five-star addition to Dubai's luxury hotel lineup, the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai can claim to be the world's tallest hotel, boasting over 1,600 guest rooms and suites spread out across two towers and 72 floors. It’s located just off the city’s famous Sheikh Zayed Road in buzzing downtown Dubai.

THE CHECK-IN: The light, open lobby is packed and buzzing but the slick black reception desks, backed with modern art, seem to stretch as far as a football pitch – so I didn’t have to wait long to be checked in and given a quick overview of the facilities and how to access them.

THE ROOM: My lead-in guest room was notable for its strangely inaccessible balcony, but there were good city views nonetheless. The bed was extremely comfortable, there was a large desk and 46-inch LCD TV, as well as the usual minibar and hot drinks station. The marble bathroom came with a separate bath and walk-in shower.

THE BUSINESS: The hotel has 32 meeting rooms totaling 86,004ft2 of event space. The 1,548ft2 Dubai Ballroom has the greatest capacity, but smaller break-out spaces are available. Rooms all feature state-ofthe- art audiovisual technology and have wifi access. Guests can access secretarial services at the business centre and concierge level.

THE FACILITIES: You might struggle to take in all the dining and bar options available at this hotel during one business trip. There are 13 venues in total. I tried sushi at the informal Izakaya, where the greenhaired ‘Wasabi Girl’ served us with a smile; fresh, modern and zingy Thai classics at Tong Thai; curry at Rang Mahal by Atul Kochhar (the first Indian chef to receive a Michelin star); 24-hour bistro and bakery, La Farine; art deco-style steak house Prime 68; and GQ Bar, a slick cocktail venue. To work it all off there is the Saray Spa and Health Club, an outdoor and indoor pool; and a hammam-themed spa.

THE VERDICT: If you plan to entertain and don’t want to move far this is the hotel for you. It's like a whole town encased in two towers. Consistently slick service and comfortably appointed.
