THE HOTEL: The 440 guestrooms and suites offer a quintessentially British stay in the heart of London's West End, with plenty of stylish artwork and nods to Winston Churchill.

THE CHECK-IN: This was ultra-speedy and seamless. Suites are located on the eighth floor, which has its own reception and the Regency Club, a cocktail lounge-cum-breakfast room.

THE ROOM: I stayed in the newly designed Saatchi Suite, which once through the door, announces itself with a blaze of reds, purples and yellows. It comes with a king-size bed, one-of-akind furniture pieces, 42-inch HDTV, large desk and vividly red couch and chairs. However the lasting memories are provided by artworks from Saatchi Gallery artist James Alec Hardy and iconic furniture designs from Vitra. The huge bathroom, with Molton Brown toiletries, has an eye-catching ‘2000-bar soap’ installation by artist Celine Fitoussi.

THE FACILITIES: The Churchill Bar and alfresco Terrace, which changes its theme depending on the season, offers an imaginative cocktail menu inspired by the life and times of Churchill. In winter, the terrace is a place to get cosy, with gas heaters and blankets and service with warming smiles. The current Vintage London Winter Terrace pop-up is on until March 2018. One of two restaurants at the hotel, The Montagu – inspired by the kitchen, dining room and menus of Chartwell, Sir Winston Churchill’s country home – offers top-quality cuisine that comes with a farm-to-table label with ingredients provided by independent and local suppliers. See chefs at work in the open-plan kitchen or enjoy a frontrow view by booking the Chef’s Table experience. The Montague also serves afternoon tea. A second restaurant, the Michelin-starred Locanda Locatelli, has a menu of Italian-inspired cuisine.

THE VERDICT: Located close to Portman Square, this stylish and ultracomfortable hotel has plenty of eyecatching features and tributes to Winston Churchill and British history. It’s a hotel you won’t forget in a hurry – and it felt pretty cool nodding off in a room brought alive by those unique Saatchi Gallery artworks

THE DETAILS: 30 Portman Square, London, W1H 7BH. The Saatchi Suite starts from around £800 a night. See regency.hyatt.com.
