Hampton by Hilton, London Waterloo
THE HOTEL: The Hampton by Hilton London Waterloo opened this spring and is the first of the hotel group's mid-scale brand in central London. It has 297 guestrooms – making it the largest Hampton by Hilton outside the United States – and is a fiveminute walk from Waterloo station.
THE CHECK-IN: The smart hotel lobby was flooded in sunshine and quite busy on this week day afternoon. The staff took a good few minutes to allocate me a room but were affable and apologetic for the delay
THE ROOM: My room was kitted out with all the basics – small wardrobe, iron and ironing board, tea and coffee, kettle, free wifi, flatscreen TV and small desk – plus a queen-size bed and sofa bed with purple upholstery and a print of the London skyline hung above the bed. The small bathroom had a walk-in shower.
THE BUSINESS: The hotel has four meeting rooms that sit 12 people boardroom-style, or two can be combined to accommodate 40 people theatre-style. Day delegate rates are from £39 per person including VAT, refreshments, lunch and wifi access.
THE FACILITIES: The ground floor blends a series of different spaces, from a casual seating area, bar – with large wall-mounted TV screen – and restaurant to a quieter workspace with large table, computers and a selection of books. Each area has a range of seating options and its own palette of cool, muted colours and London-inspired artwork. What looks like a solid wall at the end of the bar area slides open in the mornings to provide access to an adjacent restaurant where a good, hot breakfast buffet is served. There's also a 24/7 snack bar, small fitness centre and free wifi access throughout the hotel.
THE VERDICT: The guestrooms are smartly designed and well equipped, and the hotel's in a good location for transport links across the city. I particularly liked the light, airy ground floor and the blending of different spaces that created a genial atmosphere.
