Glazebrook House Hotel, Devon

THE HOTEL: Following a multi-million refurbishment to the 1865 building, the 1980s traditional country house hotel has been transformed into a chic boutique property – designed by Timothy Oulton – more redolent of London than deepest Devon. It’s full of handmade furnishings and collections of vintage and retro curios. It’s just outside the village of South Brent off the A38 roughly mid-way between Exeter and Plymouth.

THE CHECK-IN: A small desk is tucked at the back of a spacious lobby and the whole process was speedy and friendly.

THE ROOM: The hotel’s eight rooms are all different and named after characters from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland; mine was Caterpillar and overlooked the beautiful flower borders of the garden. All rooms have exceptionally comfortable beds, as indeed they should be at £15,000+ each! Features in our room included a butterfly writing desk, tree trunks for bedside tables and, as in most others, chandeliers for bedside lamps. There’s mood lighting, flatscreen TV, tea/coffee-making equipment, free wifi and a free mini-bar. Walls were dark chocolate brown and the carpet tartan.

THE BUSINESS: Wifi access is free of charge throughout the hotel. Accommodating 12 people boardroom style, the conference room is described as an ‘easygoing, inspirational space’ ideal for off-site board meetings, director conferences or strategic seminars.

THE FACILITIES:The unique delights of Dartmoor are right on the doorstep. For those who prefer not to strike out alone, guided walks tailored to suit each individual are available ( Food is an important element in the hotel’s services. Star of the show is the restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner under the direction of chef Ben Palmer with copious use of local produce. Adjacent to the kitchen the Chef’s Table allows diners to be part of the show. There’s a large red marble-topped bar and also a wine and whisky tasting room with weekly wine tastings and 30-minute tastings before dinner to help select the ideal meal accompaniment.

THE VERDICT: For informal meetings or high-level discussions the Glazebrook offers a perfect and discreet venue in a relaxing and stylish setting. The food is of a very high standard and the gardens and Dartmoor beyond offer opportunities for brief escapes.
