Doubletree by Hilton Hotel, Lincoln

THE HOTEL: This modern, 115-room hotel is part of the Hilton group’s full-service, upper/mid-market DoubleTree brand. It's in a convenient location close to the train station and city centre, and amid a throng of restaurants and bars on the Brayford Wharf development. The University of Lincoln is close at hand, as well as businesses such as BAE Systems, RBS and Siemens.

THE CHECK-IN:The glass walled ground floor lobby was almost deserted as I arrived to check-in, and a beaming member of staff soon had the paperwork wrapped up and directed me to my room. A knock came five minutes later from the same member of staff who handed over one of the brand’s trademark warm cookies, apologising profusely for forgetting at check-in!

THE ROOM: Right at the end of the corridor, my King Deluxe room was of a generous size – large enough for a sofa and coffee table, in addition to the super-comfortable double bed, long desk, wall-mounted flatscreen TV and wardrobe. The design was modern, fairly neutral, with thick, springy carpet. At the rear of the hotel, the room also had a balcony looking over some bleak offices to the impressive hill-top cathedral. Facilities included kettle and tea/coffee, safe, iron and ironing board and bathroom with separate bath and shower.

THE BUSINESS: There’s free wifi access throughout the hotel, a business centre, four meeting rooms and a top-floor ballroom with city views and capacity for 300 guests.

THE FACILITIES: The top-floor Electric bar and restaurant seems to be something of a hotspot for local residents and has views over both Brayford Wharf and the city’s historic quarter. There’s also a fitness centre and onsite parking.

THE VERDICT: Everything about this hotel was slick and efficient, from the helpful, amiable staff, to the room design, facilities and functionality. It was busy with leisure guests on the night of my weekend stay, but I imagine its corporate business is just as prolific during the week.
