Bailbrook House Hotel, Bath
THE HOTEL: Bailbrook House has been part of the Handpicked group of hotels since October 2013 following a £10million refurbishment programme which has restored the Grade II listed main building’s delightful country house atmosphere, just three miles from Bath city centre. It has 94 bedrooms, 81 of them in Bailbrook Court and 13 in the linked late 18th century main house. Handpicked was AA Hotel Group of the Year 2012-13.
THE CHECK-IN: Friendly, efficient and conducted in the comfort of one of the three royal lounges where afternoon tea and evening drinks are served.
THE ROOM: The Lady Isabella King room in the main house is a delightful large country house room with expansive windows overlooking the surrounding countryside and towards Bath. Facilities include a king size bed, several occasional tables and two comfortable armchairs, plenty of table lamps, marble fireplace,a wide-screen TV, fridge, Tshibo coffee machine and safe in the wardrobe in the separate lobby room which leads to a huge bathroom. As well as Gilchrist & Soames toiletries there is a roll-top bath in the centre of the room, large shower and separate TV.
THE BUSINESS: The whole property was once a residential training centre so the concept of corporate meetings is part of the ethos. With its own private entrance, Bailbrook Court has a range of meeting options including the largest, the well-equipped Brunel Suite which has a foyer area and atrium for pre-dinner drinks or a post-event party. It can accommodate 200 for a reception or 160 theatre-style. Upstairs is a suite of five fully-equipped rooms for training rooms or break-out sessions. There are an additional four boardroom-style executive meeting rooms in the main house with smart-screen technology and wireless presentation aids for up to 24.There is free wifi throughout the Bailbrook.
THE FACILITIES: There are two restaurants, the Cloisters – where dinner, weekend breakfast and Sunday lunch is served – and the Lansdown Brasserie restaurant open daily for breakfast and light snacks between noon and 21.30. The large Conservatory Bar is good for pre-/post-dinner drinks and also serves light snacks with an outside terrace for the warmer months. There is also a mini gym and golf is available at the local club from £36pp.
THE VERDICT: An excellent example of a British country house hotel which caters equally well for leisure guests and for the corporate world. Bailbrook House is fully geared up for hosting meetings of varying sizes and in a variety of styles. Staff are friendly and efficient.
