Avani Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand

THE HOTEL: Previously operating as the Atrium Bangkok, this is the first Avani property to open in Thailand and follows an $8million refurbishment. The hotel has 568 rooms and suites.

THE CHECK-IN: The friendly welcome and quick check-in was combined with the ‘wow’ factor first impressions of the 12-storey atrium lobby which doubles as a lively ‘lifestyle’ hub. Dominated by a striking six-metre-high artwork, this was also a good meeting point.

THE ROOM: The modern style of the public areas gives the hotel a very contemporary feel which was also reflected in my chic Avani Deluxe room. Spacious and well-equipped, it had great views of Bangkok and a stylish bathroom with great waterfall shower and toiletries. The top levels are Executive Floors where all rooms have 40-inch LCD televisions, DVD player and upgraded amenities, plus there's an Executive Lounge for breakfast and complimentary evening cocktails and canapés.

THE BUSINESS: In addition to the Executive Lounge, wifi access is free throughout the hotel, there are a range of meeting rooms and event spaces, and a business centre. The location is in the commercial and retail area of Asoke-Sukhumvit, around three kilometres from Queen Sirkit National Convention Centre. A free shuttle runs to the Makkasan Station, with good city and airport links. The nearest subway station is a seven-minute walk from the hotel.

THE FACILITIES: There are four restaurants and bars including all-day dining at PUBLIC, quick snacks from the designer deli, and light bites by the pool. Benihana, an iconic Japanese Teppanyaki steakhouse opens in March. The outdoor pool area is something of an oasis, with soft landscaping and views over bustling Bangkok. The hotel also has a sauna, steam room, massage room and fitness centre.

THE VERDICT: This is a very cool and well-located hotel. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was relaxed. The hotel's atrium entrance is a striking showpiece and the decor throughout gave the hotel a very trendy feel. The beds were comfy and the city views superb.
